Lyng gets back online as ThinkingWISP steps in

Rural broadband provider ThinkingWISP has stepped in to re-connect a Norfolk village that had been without internet connection for more than four weeks.

ThinkingWISP's service covers 90% of Norfolk and does not require a landline

Some 200 people in Lyng had been unable to access broadband since mid-May and while a replacement service was eventually put in place by former supplier RW Internet, it was so slow that many people could not even open or send an email.

ThinkingWISP, a wireless internet service provided by Norfolk Rural Community Council, AF Affinity and InTouch Systems, stepped in and purchased the assets in Lyng, including the mast and associated equipment, so that it could help to get the villagers back online.

ThinkingWISP’s Steve Temple said: “We put in a mobile mast to run a temporary feed until the fibre connection gets back online. We have been working hard to reconnect these people as quickly as we can.”

The company will be writing to all the customers next week with new direct debit forms and any other relevant information. Mr Temple added that the price of the service will remain the same.

ThinkingWISP offers “a fast way to connect to the internet without the speed, cost or service restrictions of traditional solutions. As it is wireless, you can even benefit if your current internet speed is very low because of where you live.” The service covers 90% of Norfolk and does not require a landline.

It is reported that RW Internet’s broadband service in all other areas including Lenwade, Cawston, Eastgate, Great Plumstead and Little Plumstead remains unchanged and has continued to operate normally.

Meanwhile, Lyng Parish Council has revealed details of BT OpenReach’s plans to bring high speed broadband to the street cabinets of the village, which is likely to be up and ready by the end of August at the latest.

Of the 381 properties in and around Lyng, 345 will be served by the cabinet in Lyng, of which households should receive speeds of more than 24 Mb.

A public meeting to exchange broadband information will be held at 7.30 pm on Friday 27 June in Lyng Village Hall.
