Another successful open day at Whitwell Common

The weather held (just) for another successful open day at Whitwell Common on Saturday 20 June, which was enjoyed by all who attended.

One of the new visitor information boards at Whitwell Common

The support of the local moth group was greatly appreciated and specialist Greg Bond kept us all entertained with the fascinating contents of the moth traps, which had been set the night before. There were some interesting and rare specimens that helped to make the day special.

We were also incredibly lucky to have renowned Norfolk-based botanist Simon Harrap give his time to take all the visitors on a guided walk to identify the flora on the Common. As with the moths, there were many rare finds and Simon taught us much about the uses and origins of the plants, as well as explanations of some of the unusual names.

The three new information boards were admired by all and it was generally agreed that they enhanced visitors’ appreciation of the Common, providing a way of identifying many of the flora and fauna to be found there.

After the walk there were the traditional refreshments and a chance to ask questions of Simon, Greg and the trustees.

Many thanks to all who gave their time so freely to make the day a success.
