Kilimanjaro challenge for cancer charity

The chair of Reepham-based Synergy Multi Academy Trust has been giving talks on how he climbed Africa’s highest mountain earlier this year.

Tony Williams, who is also a member of the Reepham & District Rotary Club, reached the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania shortly before 7 am on 3 March, having completed the final 4,000-foot ascent via the Rongai route in just seven hours.

The six-day trek involved five nights under canvas in temperatures as low as -17°C. As there was so little oxygen at the 19,341-foot (5,895-metre) summit, he was not encouraged to stay for too long and his party returned with their guide to base camp after just 10 minutes for photographs.

Eight of the nine-strong group completed the ascent and Mr Williams, who was at least 20 years older than the rest of the climbers, said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Mr Williams is now giving talks on his trek for donations to the Big C cancer charity. So far he has raised around £2,400, including gift aid and can be contacted by email. Donations can be made HERE

He also completed the Three Peaks Challenge 10 years ago, raising money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The Synergy Multi Academy Trust incorporates Reepham High School and College and Reepham Primary School.
