Public-speaking skills tested in Youth Speaks event

The public-speaking skills of the district’s young people were put to the test at Reepham High School, thanks to Rotarians who were involved in coaching and judging of Youth Speaks 2017. Reepham & District Rotary Club also provided cash prizes and a trophy for the winners.

The theme was “Introducing the New National Awareness Day” whereby each chose a title for the day and then spoke about why they had chosen that.

Unanimously chosen as the winner was Molly Jarvis, who proposed mobile phone-free days. The runner-up was Angus Weston, who thought we should be aware of human genetic modification – a difficult subject handled very well. An excellent third place, Innes O’Malley, who barely used notes, spoke of whales’ awareness – and stressed that he didn’t mean Wales.

The standard was again high, the remaining runners-up being not far behind, and all speakers and the audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy the evening.

Technology Tournament

The 11th Rotary Technology Tournament will be held on 3 March from 11 am – 3 pm at Hewitt Academy Norwich, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Norwich, Norwich St Edmund and Reepham & District.

Pupils work in teams of four to solve a simulated, real-life practical problem. After 30 minutes to organise their roles and produce design ideas, they have four hours to work with limited tools and materials to produce their practical solutions to the problem.

All participating young people receive a certificate of attendance and there are trophies for the winners in each category.

Reepham High School was the overall winner in last year’s event and also took first place in the intermediate level category.
