Classic car and bike show celebrates German motoring excellence

This year’s Reepham Classic Car and Bike Festival, held in Reepham’s Market Place last Sunday, celebrated the best of German engineering.

Now in its fourth year, the event was fully booked out with well over 100 veteran, vintage, classic and future classic cars and motorbikes providing a day of indulgence for collectors, enthusiasts and the car-curious from around the county.

Entry was free to all makes and models of classic car and motorbike, with a suggested donation to Cancer Awareness.

With previous years focusing on Britain and Italy, this year the spotlight fell on the beauty of German engineering, highlighting classic cars and motorbikes from some of the country’s most iconic brands, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen and Opel, as well as showcasing some of the lesser known makes like Borgward, NSU, Heikel, Messerschermitt and Karman Ghia.

Around half of the 120 vehicles at this year’s festival were German models.

Festival organiser Peter Fitzjohn said he received a lot of interest for the event and originally had 112 cars booked.

“However, because Sunday was such an unexpectedly sunny day after a predominately wet week we had a lot of cars turning up 'on spec' and taking up considerably more space than I would have liked,” he said. “Next year the event will have to be ticketed.”

Norfolk Police brought along its Porsche Cayman GT4 to the festival, donated to them by the Lind Trust for the development of road safety, especially among young drivers.

Gordon Weston, ambassador for Men United, the campaign initiated by the charity Prostate Cancer UK, was there with his Porsche 924S, a project car he bought at auction shortly before being diagnosed with the disease, but which he now uses to raise awareness and funds for the charity through hill climbing, track days and racing.

  • The next Reepham Classic Car and Bike Festival is planned for Sunday 30 September 2018.
