In 2012, when the tennis courts at Stimpson’s Piece were derelict and unplayable, Mr Gurney-Read was instrumental in getting together a small committee of volunteers, negotiating terms of a lease with Reepham Town Council (the trustees of Stimpson’s Piece) and securing funding to completely refurbish the courts and establish a new tennis club.
 
This included lottery funding as part of the legacy of London 2012 with additional support from Broadland District Council.
 
The club is now thriving and provides excellent facilities for the local community.
 
Mr Gurney-Read said: “I’ve been a keen tennis player for many years and when I moved to Reepham I thought it was a shame that the courts at Stimpson’s Piece were unloved and unused.
 
“It’s been a lot of hard work by everyone on the committee to get the new club up and running, but I’m stepping down at a time when the club is successful and has a great team of people to carry it forward.
 
“Small local clubs like this only exist because of the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers, so I would encourage anyone who values these facilities to get involved so we can keep the club running for many more years to come.”
 
The tennis club has now grown to around 140 members with men’s and women’s teams and a growing children’s coaching programme run by local coaching providers, the National Tennis Association.
 
There are also regular social club nights and mornings where members can just turn up and play with others.
 
As a non-profit making organisation, the club is run by a committee of volunteers who meet every couple of months and which is responsible for all governance, finance and the general running of the club.
 
“All the current committee members have been in post since the club started in 2012, so it is now imperative that we try and recruit new members,” said Mr Gurney-Read.
 
“I will continue to be involved with the club, but in a much reduced capacity, focusing on sponsorship and fundraising.
 
“Ideally, my replacement will have connections within the Norfolk tennis community, but it is by no means a requirement of the role.
 
“We just need enthusiastic individuals who have a few spare hours every couple of months and are passionate about keeping the club going.”
 
As well as a new chairperson, the club is seeking support with social media, organising events and fundraising.
 
The committee is interested in hearing from any local people (members and non-members) who feel they might be able to contribute, in any capacity, to the running of the club.
