Main road at Cawston to close for resurfacing and bridge repairs

Norfolk County Council is planning to carry out carriageway resurfacing work on the B1145 at Cawston and repairs to Salle Bridge, which are needed following recent accident damage to the brick parapet wall.

The bridge repairs and resurfacing works, which will now take place from Monday 12 August to Tuesday 20 August, will overlap, which will shorten the length of the road works compared with carrying them out separately, said the council’s project engineer bridges Pat Donagh.

The work will be carried out in the following three stages:

  • repair of the damaged brick parapet wall and safety fence at Salle Bridge (from Monday 12 August to be completed on or before Sunday 18 August);
  • carriageway widening works to the northern verge just west of the Cawston Bridge and other surfacing preparatory works (Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 August); this will require three-way traffic signals, but with the B1145 over Salle Bridge remaining closed;
  • carriageway resurfacing work, which will last two days (Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 August) with a road closure.

Pedestrian access along the B1145 will be maintained at all times.

A proposed diversion route (pictured above) has been issued showing the limit of the works (in red), with Salle Bridge at the western end and Cawston Bridge at the eastern end.

It should be noted that further repair works are required to the damaged approach fences on Cawston Bridge. They have not been included in these works as it would further extend the road closure by around three days.

It is proposed that the fence repairs will be delayed until the autumn school half term (between 21 October and 25 October).
