Stand up for mental health in Norfolk

One in four people will know someone close to them who has a mental health issue; it may even be you.

Nigel Boldero

The Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust is responsible for the mental well-being of everyone who comes forward or is referred to them for help in Norfolk and Suffolk, whether they are being treated within the community, a hospital or perhaps a residential unit caring for people with dementia.

Have you ever thought about getting involved with your local NHS Trust as a way of helping to shape their services? By becoming a member you can:

  • find out more about mental health issues and the services the Trust provides;
  • give information and comment on its services and plans;
  • elect some of the governors of the Trust who play an even more active part.

You could even stand for election as a governor yourself. This is what I did a few months ago and I’m pleased to say that I’m now one of seven “public governors” representing Norfolk in the Trust.

Membership is open to everyone living in Norfolk or Suffolk (the area served by the Trust) providing you are over 11 years of age. We are particularly keen to encourage membership by younger people – including those of high school age – to ensure we have good representation across the age range.

As a public governor, I am trying to provide information to local people and feed back their comments and views to the Trust. Governors try to ensure the Trust is providing effective and efficient services.

I want to hear about local experiences of mental health and NHS services. I am also happy to come and talk to groups about the work of a Trust governor and how you can become involved.
