The road closure is because of the erection of scaffolding to allow improvements to, and maintenance on, Whitwell Station bridge (pictured), which is expected to be completed by 13 December.

According to Whitwell Station, all the timber boards across the bridge will be replaced and a non-slip rubber mat surfacing fixed across the new wooden deck.

Scaffolding will be erected to allow corrosion on the surface of the metal underside of the bridge to be cleaned and repainted.

Whitwell Road will be closed to vehicles until the work is complete. Pedestrian access under the bridge and along Whitwell Road will be maintained at all times and a fully-signed, official diversion route for vehicles will be in place.

The alternative route is via: Whitwell Road, School Road, B1145 Dereham Road/Bawdeswell Road/Reepham Road, Norwich Road), A1067 Fakenham Road/Main Road/Sparham Hill, Nowhere Lane, Whitwell Common (Bawdeswell, Great Witchingham, Sparham, Reepham).

A short diversion route will also be provided for users of the Marriott’s Way as the bridge will not be passable while the improvement work is carried out.
