This work was planned long before the pandemic hit and “has now become urgent and is essential to ensure that the centre is kept in good condition for the benefit of the local community,” said chair Les West.

“The work will create a new reading room with a larger selection of second-hand books for sale, along with a new beverage area and storage facilities for the different clubs and societies that use the centre on a regular basis.”

The centre will be closed week from Monday 14 September and will reopen on Monday 21 September.

The Bircham Centre charity shop is now open on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and the book stall and Country Market stall is held in the Market Place on Wednesday mornings.

During the period while the work is being carried out the centre will not be able to accept any donations of goods.
