Community event aims to make Reepham ‘fall-proof’

Reepham’s first Grow Your Community event, which will take place at the Town Hall on Thursday 10 April from 10 am – 2 pm, will have a special focus on falls prevention.

Falling over is a possibility for everyone, and can potentially cause serious injury. There are, however, a number of things that can be done to minimise the risk of falls, and to minimise the chance of injury when they happen.

One important way to reduce the risk is wearing the right footwear, especially around the home. Members of the public are invited to bring their old slippers to this event, where we will swap them for a pair of brand new, ideally fitted and slip-resistant slippers for free.

Broadland District Council ran its first slipper exchange in Hellesdon in 2012 and the response was so great that extra pairs had to be ordered.

New slippers can greatly reduce the risk of a fall, but no falls-prevention work can eliminate the risk entirely. Broadland’s first ever “Falls Safety” classes will be piloted at this event, where Dan Goodwin will be delivering 20 minute taster sessions.

As well as looking at techniques on posture and balance that can help you avoid falls, he will be giving practical tips on ways you can fall more safely so that you don’t pick up a serious injury.

This is a practical class involving the use of (very soft) crash mats designed to give you real skills to protect yourself, but Dan has designed the sessions to make them safe and fun for all fitness levels, so if you don’t feel comfortable using the crash mats, there’s still plenty to learn.

In addition, a range of local community groups and service providers will be on hand to give you a taste of what’s on offer in Reepham.

The event is open to anyone who wants to browse the stands and exchange some slippers. There will also be free refreshments and a buffet.
