Reepham criterium events cancelled

A series of criterium cycling races, which were due to be held on a closed street circuit around the centre of Reepham on Sunday 16 August, has been cancelled.

British Cycling pulled the plug on the events after Broadland District Council withdrew its support owing to issues with Highways requirements and a lack of public consultation and community engagement.

The events have been poorly promoted within town and it is understood that Broadland’s Economic Development team were concerned that there had been little engagement with Reepham Town Council and local residents.

With less than a week to go, awareness of the events within Reepham was very low, and residents and businesses not adequately prepared for the disruption that would have taken place. Roads in a circuit around the town centre would have been closed from around 3.30 pm until 9.30 pm

Further, opportunities in terms of economic development and community engagement have been lost by what appears to have been poor organisation and promotion.

The event organiser, Wayne Marks, was not contactable and the website of event promoter Team VO2 Bikes was also not available on Monday 10 August, when news of the cancellation surfaced.

Norfolk Country Cottages, which was the main sponsor for the criterium races, expressed disappointment at the short notice of the cancellation.

General manager Heather McCraith said: “It is disappointing not only for us as one of the sponsors, but for those who have entered for what should have been an exciting afternoon of racing.”
