ATM planned for busy road junction

BT has submitted a planning application to install a combined public payphone and ATM cash machine at the junction of Station Road and Market Place on Townsend Corner, Reepham.

What a combined public payphone and ATM cash machine on Townsend Corner could look like

BT says the introduction of an ATM machine near the town centre will “help to encourage people to withdraw cash to use within the surrounding area thereby supporting local businesses”.

The combined payphone and ATM kiosk measures 0.9 metres x 0.9 metres.

BT says combined telephone/ATMs are installed on 1-tonne concrete blocks anchoring the units to the pavement to prevent ram-raiding, the casing is hardened steel to prevent unauthorised access to the ATM, and the system is alarmed and connected to a monitoring centre through multiple communications links, enabling instant police response.

Other security measures are also installed, but these have been omitted from the public application to prevent giving potential criminals any advantage.

BT says it has been installing combined telephone/ATMs since 2006 and already has 550 installed across the UK.

Following the closure of Reepham’s only bank in October, HSBC has been in ongoing discussions with an ATM provider for the provision of a replacement cash machine in the Market Place.

Use of the existing red telephone box outside the Bircham Centre had been suggested as one possibility, but it now appears BT is looking at an alternative.
