Report on Reepham Society talk on the Norfolk Record Office

The Reepham Society held a highly successful meeting yesterday evening in St Michael’s with 35 members and guests attending, including 4 new members.

We were treated to a fascinating, informal and wide-ranging talk by Susan Maddock, Principal Archivist at the Norfolk Record Office (NRO).  Susan gave an enthusiastic and hugely knowledgeable account of the work of the NRO and the free exhibitions, resources, and research support that it offers to ordinary members of the public interested in local history, family trees or educational research.  In the second part of her talk she discussed a range of documents including wills and maps relating to Reepham and the individuals who lived here from mediaeval to modern times.  Throughout the talk and afterwards there were lively and informed questions from the audience, who were occasionally able to add new facts about the subject and in one case even to correct an error in documents from the sale of Ollands House.

The Norfolk Record Office is the largest in the UK outside London, holds the highest rating available to an archive service and the entire collections are designated as being of outstanding national and international importance.  All of this is nearly on our doorstep, located as it is next to County Hall.  So, if you have any interest in any aspect of local or Norfolk history, please have a look at the Norfolk Record Office website at http://www.archives.norfolk.gov.uk/  to find out more and perhaps plan a visit.
