Jobs lost as station café closes without warning

Blackham Station Café has closed, with business advisors Larking Gowen confirming they have been instructed to assist the directors in placing the company into voluntary liquidation.

The reasons for the closure remain unclear and the owner, Nicola Dixon, has declined to comment.

A spokesperson for several former employees said the job losses covered six staff members who each worked from three to five days a week, plus three young people who helped out at weekends.

The closure was announced in a Facebook post on 27 May. The employees were given less than half a day’s notice of the closure, the spokesperson said, and their wages remain unpaid.

The spokesperson also claimed that rumours of recent rent increases were untrue.

Doug Bennett of neighbouring home accessories and gifts shop Cushion Cottage confirmed that his business was open as usual and had seen little disruption from the café closure.

Mr Bennett pointed out that the café had operated under a lease from Kerri’s Farmhouse Pine Ltd and hoped that a new tenant would soon be found.
