Put the kettle on – cake business started up in cottage kitchen

Although home baking has increased during lockdown, not everyone is obsessed with it – and many people with busy lives simply do not have the time for baking.

After having made cakes for friends and family for many years, as well for herself and her husband, Wood Dalling resident Ali Dawes thought: “I wonder if other people might like a cake baked every now and then?”

It seems they do, so earlier this year she decided to set up a cake business from her country cottage kitchen.

Ali’s Home Bakes offers cakes and biscuits that are traditional in style, such as Victoria sponge, chocolate and carrot cakes, rather than beautifully iced and decorated cakes, which “isn’t really my thing”, said Ms Dawes, a self-taught baker who has worked in local tearooms and started out as a window dresser for Jarrolds in Norwich after leaving school.

Christmas puddings will also be made to order this year starting in September.

The new cake business, which has a 5 star food hygiene rating from Broadland District Council, has set up a Facebook page and an Instagram account, and recently carried out a leaflet drop around Wood Dalling and Thurning; it already has several customers in Heydon.

Collection is from the Dawes’ home in Wood Dalling and local delivery can be arranged: deliveries to Wood Dalling, Heydon and Salle are free, with a small charge for deliveries to Reepham and other local areas, depending on the value of order.

All social distancing regulations will be respected, with collection/delivery at a pre-arranged time.

Payment is by cash or BACS payment direct to a bank account.
