It had previously come to the attention of the council that some youths were attempting to make jumps in areas around the town that were not appropriate.

Councillors recently met with an enthusiastic group of youngsters to look at creating a space where they can enjoy creating jumps and tracks and riding their bikes.

It was subsequently agreed at a council meeting to create a designated area at Stimpson’s Piece for this activity.

This will be the wooded area towards the bottom of the town’s recreation ground, which extends from the dog walking/tennis courts car park down to the footpath at the bottom.

It was also agreed that the car park or surrounding grass areas will not be used as part of this activity, which is to be contained within the wooded area.

“The young people are going to create the space they want, making the tracks and jumps themselves,” the town council said. “It is going to be a project for them to work on together.”

It should be noted that the youths will be using this area at their own risk, as it will be unsupervised.

Parents are being encouraged to speak to their children about the risks and the importance of staying safe in that area and being considerate of other users of Stimpson’s Piece.

The town council is organising signs to be placed around the perimeter of the area to warn other users of cyclists.
