Cricket club talks up prospects for next season

The last game of the season for Reepham & Salle Cricket Club has been played, the grounds at both Salle and Reepham High School have had their final roll and talks now centre on winter nets, the annual general meeting and prospects for next season.

Although we didn’t quite reach the dizzy, promotional heights of 2015, both Saturday teams equipped themselves well, with our second side finishing a tantalising third and the firsts comfortably mid-table.

Our Sunday team had a mixed season overall and unfortunately found themselves relegated. However, the club always looks for the positives and playing in a lower league next year will give us the opportunity to promote and develop our younger members.

As usual, our youth training nights proved popular with Paul Harwood & Co rising to the task with, on occasions, more than 30 enthusiastic youngsters on Monday evenings. As an experiment, coaching sessions were extended for some over the school holidays and, as these proved popular, there are plans to develop further sessions next summer.

Moving forward, we have our AGM on 16 November and George Wright is currently sorting out winter nets. The club is also looking for a new treasurer as Simon (Spider) Wilkinson, who has done a sterling job for the club over the years, is intending to step down. If anyone is interested, please get in touch (an interest in cricket is not a requirement).

There are so many people involved on and off the pitch and the club wouldn’t function without them. To pick out a few is almost impossible, but George Wright, Joe Hollis, Paul Harwood and Billy Beales all deserve a mention, as well as the Allen family, who deservedly won the clubperson(s) of the year.

Thanks again to Peter Salisbury of the Kings Arms for his continued (and much appreciated) support and Jim Everton, our president, a constant beacon of encouragement.

Finally, we have had to say farewell to Rajiv Choudhary, who has decided to step down as second Saturday team captain and join a club nearer home to spend more time with his family. He has been a wonderful player and an inspiration to the club over the years; he will be missed.
