During this period, the main hallway will be redecorated: the old carpet tiles will be removed and the wooden floor repaired, sanded and varnished. The hallway will also be painted and the noticeboards renewed.

Les West, chair of the trustees, said: “This will give a fresh look to the entrance of the centre and create a great welcome to all visitors and users.”

The entire building will be closed while the work is being carried out, including the library, the charity shop, book room, meeting rooms and the archive; the Country Market will hold its weekly sale on Wednesday 21 September in front of the building.

The Bircham Centre’s doors will reopen on Saturday 24 September.

The work is being funded as part of a grant received from the National Lottery Community Fund.
