Caring for listed buildings and heritage building initiatives

Dear Reepham Society Members and non-members too, of course, I thought I should put out a reminder about what promises to be a really interesting talk on 10th June.  Lynette Fawkes from Broadland District Council Conservation Department will give a double-themed presentation on Caring for Listed Buildings and Heritage Building Initiatives.

I have heard Lynette as a key speaker in support of the English Heritage ‘Buildings at Risk’ project in East Anglia and I can say I’ve never quite looked at buildings in the same way since.  I don’t doubt that the same will be true when she speaks about ‘Caring for Listed Buildings’.

Lynette’s other theme, ‘Heritage Building Initiatives’ should interest all of who live in a town as rich in features as Reepham.  One of the initiatives is the establishment by Broadland of a Local List of buildings and features that, though not listed nationally, are felt by the community to be precious to our life and environment and therefore worth protecting.  In brief, residents can recommend that any building, feature or piece of land should be registered on the Local List.  If Broadland accepts the recommendation that feature is then included on the Local List and will receive special consideration in any planning application that might impact on it.  Another, though less developed initiative is the idea of ‘Heritage Warden’ volunteers, whose task, after training would be to keep an eye open for and report changes that might damage or degrade the cultural or heritage aspects of the town.

Lynette’s illustrated talk will be in St Michael’s at 7.30pm on Tuesday the 10th of June.  All are welcome.  Entrance for Reepham society members is free, for others there will be a charge of £2 on the door, or of course you can pay the annual membership subscription of £5 and join the Society.

Look forward to seeing you.
